  • This image was made in the general vicinity that William Wordsworth lived. It’s hardly surprising that so much of Wordsworth’s poetry is steeped in his deep love of nature !<br />
<br />
As the forecast had called for rain showers through most of the day, I wasn’t really expecting to do much photography this autumn morning. Nonetheless, I decided to drive down towards the lakes just to be amidst nature before the rains came down.<br />
<br />
When this scene presented itself, I had to stop and make an image - neither the gusty winds nor the slight drizzle were going to deter me ! I took some time to find the right composition that accentuated the squiggly branches on the foreground tree while also providing some separation from the background tree covered with bright autumn foliage. This pause also allowed me to find just the right moment when the wind subsided to render all the branches in sharp focus. <br />
<br />
I have been excited to process and print this photograph ever since I clicked the shutter on this scene. I’m thrilled with the way the print has shaped up.
    Autumn Poem
  • In 2012, I spent over an extended length of time photographing the Great Smoky Mountain National Park. As beautiful as the place was in autumn, the first few days of photography left me a tad underwhelmed. I didn’t feel my images had done justice to the beautiful spectacle that I was witnessing. But my luck was to turn shortly thereafter. A deep ledge had prevented access to this scene by the river. After scrambling down the ledge and over a few giant boulders, I came in front of this picturesque spectacle. Here, nature seemed to compose the most beautiful symphony inspired by autumn foliage and the gushing river.
    Autumn Rhapsody
  • I look at photography as a vehicle to provide a visual into how I felt while making my images. <br />
When I had visited this exact grove of trees earlier in the season, the scene appeared noisy and chaotic! So I passed up on making images there - expecting it to be one of so many gorgeous scenes that are beautiful in passing, but difficult to translate into a photograph!!<br />
<br />
As the autumn season progressed and trees started to shed leaves, I returned to this grove. That late evening, after the sun had gone behind the mountain ridges, I was a lone witness to a scene transformed. Now, I could feel a quiet sense of calm take over while still being surrounded by vibrant autumn foliage.
    Autumn Quiet
  • Nature’s elements help transform a scene into a photograph. Mist and vibrant autumn hues surrounding the waterfall provide the emotional inspiration in this image.
    Mystical Autumn
  • While making this image, I was drawn to the filigree like autumn foliage that seemed to be dangling delicately from the snow covered, silver branches of this wonderful oak tree.
    Autumn Filigree
  • As I was running from one state to another in the New England area chasing autumn color, my initial instinct was to aim my camera any which way and shoot as entire hillsides were painted in wonderful shades of autumn foliage. Once I got past that, (which incidentally took a few days to get over !) I started to look for compositions that caught my attention. <br />
<br />
I chanced upon this bridge across the gently flowing Swift River ! The surrounding hillsides that were drenched in autumn foliage gave this scene an idyllic look.

  • Photographing autumn colors in Colorado is a surreal experience. Groves of aspen trees, a potpourri of autumn colors and grand mountain vistas all make for incredible photo opportunities. While making this image, I was drawn to the bare silver trunks of these tall standing aspens. A lone young aspen tree provided visual relief and depth to the composition.
    Standing Tall
  • Aspen trees all over Colorado turn into a beautiful potpourri of colors in autumn. After driving hundreds of miles, I was able to find this grove of tall standing aspens unveiling the full glory of the autumn color palette.
    Aspen Blaze
  • Groves of maple trees in autumn are a breathtaking sight. However, they can be extremely challenging to photograph as one has to find order in a seemingly chaotic array of colors. While making this photograph, I had to find a singular grove that told the story of the entire region. <br />
Autumnal Palette was made at White Mountain National Forest in New Hampshire and has been exhibited at the Viewpoint Gallery Annual Juried Auction.

  • I enjoy making photographs in the bayou as here, time appears to have stood still even as Spanish Moss envelopes giant cypress trees !! The juxtaposition of soft green moss and tan colored autumn foliage provided a compelling subject matter. The placid waters of the bayou unified the scene to underscore the feeling of calm I experienced while making this image.
    Cypress Magic
  • I have often been drawn to making photographs of sandstone. Striations in the stone provide a rich canvas for my photographs and they make for an interesting pairing when juxtaposed with the autumn foliage. <br />
<br />
The furrowed sandstone face provides a rough, textured backdrop while the foliage acts as a soft, delicate counter balance, in a near yin-yang setting.<br />

This photograph was made at Zion National Park in Utah.
    SANDSTONE MURAL #1
  • While I have a general area of interest when I’m out making photographs, I tend to be spontaneous and flexible about the specific subject matter. The morning when I made this image was no different. <br />
<br />
I was hiking towards a stone quarry with the aim of making abstract photographs. However, the area was in and out of rain showers. It was during this window that I came upon this lone tree with its bright autumn foliage being softly illuminated by low angled light. As the sun was also coming in and out of a thick cloud cover, I had to find a quick vantage point. I chose the dry stone to lead the viewer into the photograph.

  • Staring at canyon walls towering 2000 feet high can be an awe-inspiring sight as it dwarfs us amidst the grand landscapes carved by nature. In this image, the grand sandstone cliffs &amp; autumn cottonwoods seemed to converge with the cascading Virgin River.
    Confluence
  • I absolutely love photographing autumn in the American Southwest. Not only is it an opportunity to immerse myself in these grand landscapes, but also to make photographs in incredibly favorable light. The vibrant cottonwood and maple trees are truly an embellishment to an already amazing canvas !
    Color Burst
  • I enjoy visiting the Eastern slopes of the Sierra range in autumn. The light is often dramatic and aspens that turn gold provide an endless possibility of compositional opportunities. I had explored the same grove of aspens a few seasons before I made this image. However, the conditions had been less than ideal. While making this image, I was captivated by how brilliant this tall standing grove of aspens appeared.
    Aspen Gold
  • I enjoy the feeling of bliss and calm when I’m in the field making photographs. It allows me to slow down and have the scene speak to me. I often look to portray these emotions and conversations through my work. <br />
<br />
While making this image, a grove of slender birch trees seemed to be illuminated ever so softly with remarkable late afternoon light. The delicate autumn foliage that dotted these trees provided the ideal foil to its textured bark.
    Echoes of Acadia
  • As I drove through Aspendell one early autumn morning, the valley beneath the Sierra ridges was colored with the most vibrant shades of aspen foliage. However, grey overcast skies did not provide the right combination of elements that I was looking for. I returned to the scene later that morning once the storm clouds started to clear. The clearing accented this idyllic mountain scenery that appeared to be so full of life and color.

  • Every time I’ve visited Zion National Park, I have been in awe at the canyon walls towering around me. It has made me realize how grand nature’s spectacles can be! While making this image, I found the juxtaposition of vibrant autumn cottonwoods and the tan colored sandstone walls of Zion canyon intriguing. It was quite challenging to visually separate these elements while making the photograph. The Pulpit rising from the river cove lent a spiritual touch to the scene and I used the surrounding cottonwood trees to frame it.

    Autumn Vibes
  • Yosemite is an awe inspiring national park and this is particularly true during a storm. These storms allow nature's raw elements to fuse together thereby creating a rich canvas for photography. <br />
<br />
This image was made during one such storm last year. The swirling mist from the oncoming storm hugged the top of giant granite cliffs and the ridges between them lending mystery and depth to an already dramatic scene.
    Approaching Storm and The Rostrum
  • The effects of climate change are evident in Yosemite National Park too as forest fires have burnt through large parts of this area, often threatening nearby mountain communities. <br />
<br />
This photograph was made in one such section of the park that had been previously burnt. I had tucked away this section of the park to visit when conditions were more conducive for photography. <br />
<br />
That opportunity presented itself when a huge storm rolled in. As the storm intensified, thick fog enveloped this section of the park creating a soft, mysterious contrast to the burnt tree barks and stumps.
    Burnt Trees in Fog
  • Despite having a fear of heights, I had to be perched precariously on narrow boulders to photograph down a narrow gully. This was essential to capture the wispy cascades tumbling down from a giant waterfall.
    Wispy Torrents
  • I made this image during the first Sierra snow storm many winters ago. It was a fascinating experience to make intimate landscapes in the middle of a storm. The vibrant aspen leaves resembled sugar coated orange lollipops after this fresh dusting of snow! After making this image, I returned to the same spot later that evening. But by then, most of the aspen leaves had fallen off the trees and what was left had started to turn brown. This just went to show how ephemeral these beautiful moments with nature can be. <br />
<br />
Aspen Leaves and Snow has been exhibited at Yosemite Renaissance XXVIII, Kellicutt International Photo Show and at the “Off The Beaten Path” exhibit in The G2 Gallery.

  • I find a walk in the woods to be a therapeutic exercise. The sights, scents and sounds of the woods rejuvenate my mind and soul. <br />
<br />
On this day, I had gone deep into the woods. After a couple of hours making images in other parts of the woods, I stumbled upon this section. The light cast a soft afterglow in the forest, while the low angled light created a warm canvas over the distant hills. I used the fallen foreground trees to provide depth to the composition.

  • After a short hike on an unmarked path, I came upon this bare tree growing on a rocky outcrop. Despite the difficulty of growing over a raised rocky bed, this tree seemed to be reaching upto the skies.

  • I find it irresistible to photograph bare trees! Once they have shed their leaves, honing in on their bare trunks and branches seems to reveal their structure; almost like an inner strength ! While making this image, it appeared as if these oak trees were guarding the young pine from the elements !

  • When I was exploring the Derwentwater area, I came upon a wonderful section of woodlands. The area was ripe to exercise my creative juices by the sheer variety of shapes, textures, and colors. <br />
<br />
I was captivated by the outstretched branches of this magnificent mossy, bare tree. The colored understory provided a warm canvas to showcase the sprawl.

  • The woods surrounding Derwentwater are truly wonderful to explore. The quiet lifestyle of the English countryside provides the perfect playground to commune with nature.<br />
<br />
While making this image, I was drawn to the overlapping trunks and twigs of these mossy trees. The low angled light seemed to provide a soft afterglow to the mossy trees.
    Crisscrossed
  • Most of my photographs are made with a tripod as that allows me to slow down. <br />
<br />
This photograph is an exception as we went canoeing through the bayou! This was an incredible way to experience the bayou as it allowed me to get deep into otherwise inaccessible parts of the bayou. Here, all that I heard was the bird whistles and spanish moss ruffling in the wind from grand cypress trees.
    Heart of the Bayou
  • There aren’t too many places I could dream of being in a snow storm besides Yosemite. This place is a photographer’s winter wonderland as meadows turn into snow blankets and bare trees into graphic symbols. <br />
<br />
I was drawn to this iconic elm tree that was transformed by snow pellets lashing across its face into a pointillistic work of art !

  • Early morning light bouncing off the walls of Zion Canyon often turns the Virgin River into a bed of glittering gold. While making this image, I had to wade through water that was more than knee high in many places that fall morning. In fact, the flow was so high that access to Zion Narrows had to be closed just a few hours later !! After wading for more than an hour in these conditions, I came to this vantage point that seemed to lead me deeper into the canyon through the gold rimmed river.

  • I rarely go to a photo location with a very specific composition in mind. I often let the scene speak to me and pick up the camera when if I find the light complementing it. <br />
<br />
This occasion was no different at the Merced National Wildlife Refuge. The refuge encompasses thousands of acres of wetlands that plays host to a variety of migratory birds in autumn and winter. <br />
<br />
When I visited the refuge, what caught my eye were the tall reeds growing in the marshlands. They formed a variety of interesting shapes reflecting off the wetlands. I used a black and white rendering to draw attention to the wonderful geometry on offer.
    A Study In Shapes
  • The quiet peace of winter is just as alluring as the vibrance of spring and autumn. This is a time for silent reflection even as nature appears to be on a temporary pause. However, as spring nears, nature undergoes a transformation - as blooming trees, gushing rivers and chirping birds return !
