• My trips to Yosemite usually begins with a pit-stop at Ferns Spring to fill up my water bottles! The water has a crisp feel to it (must be due to the magic of the Sierra earth that it flows through)! For being one of Yosemite's smaller cascades, Ferns Spring packs quite a punch for photographic potential! Here, the reflections of nearby foliage accents the gentle cascades.
The Mighty Little Waterfall
• The process of experimenting with abstract compositions in water is thoroughly fascinating for me as it throws up a range of interesting possibilities. While making photographs near Ferns Spring, I chanced upon a patch of water that reflected the surrounding vibrant spring foliage. I was able to make a few photographs before the light turned harsh.

• Early morning light bouncing off the walls of Zion Canyon often turns the Virgin River into a bed of glittering gold. While making this image, I had to wade through water that was more than knee high in many places that fall morning. In fact, the flow was so high that access to Zion Narrows had to be closed just a few hours later !! After wading for more than an hour in these conditions, I came to this vantage point that seemed to lead me deeper into the canyon through the gold rimmed river.
River of Light
• The Pacific Northwest region is a photographer’s dream as it is home to many of the country’s most spectacular mountains and temperate rainforests. This region also boasts an array of lesser known but equally breathtaking places for photography.
The ice cave where I made this image is one such gem that is off the beaten track in the Three Sisters Wilderness in Oregon. I was fortunate to be hiking here with a group as the trail is completely unmarked. Once we got to the ice cave, the opportunities for photography seemed endless. It was eerily wonderful to be making photographs inside the ice-cave even as the bright light of day seemed to be slowly melting away the ice. I wanted to showcase the light illuminating the ice cave walls and the water trickling from the roof of the cave.
Deep Within
• The excitement was palpable as I made my way out in the dark to photograph Niagara Falls. I could hear the falls well before I had even seen it. It started as a distant rumble and then turned into a thunderous roar as I drove down the Niagara Scenic Parkway !! The first sight of the falls was more magical than I can put into words - the horseshoe shape, water cascading to begin with and then tumbling into a seemingly bottomless abyss and mist rising from the river bed - all made for a very special memory. I wanted to capture the thrill that went through my flesh and soul while making this photograph.

• Adhering to the philosophy that a little bit of confusion in a photograph is essential, this image was meant to engage the mind in the duality of a scene being both dynamic and stationary. The flowing river and the stationary trees embody these opposing moods.

Ode to Dogwoods
• As the snow melt progresses through the spring months in the Sierra Nevada, the raging rivers are a sight to behold. I anchored this image on a lone sapling that seemed to be clinging on for dear life amidst the raging Merced River in spring.
Tenacity
• Despite having a fear of heights, I had to be perched precariously on narrow boulders to photograph down a narrow gully. This was essential to capture the wispy cascades tumbling down from a giant waterfall.

• The Pacific Coast near Santa Cruz with its dramatic bluffs, rugged rocks, and sea stacks provide fascinating subjects for photography. I made this image at dusk as the last light in the sky reflected over the rugged rocks and the wave swept shoreline.
• Nikon's 70-200mm f2.8 lens is one of my favorite lenses for landscape photography. Not only is the glass of outstanding quality, it is also my "go-to" lens to make intimate landscape photographs. After hiking to Proxy Falls in Oregon, I was overwhelmed to see the waterfall in full flow. I made some images with a wider angle lens. However, what really caught my eye was the falls cascading over the lush verdant moss. I immediately switched over to the 70-200mm lens and was thrilled to zero in on this composition.

• Yosemite National Park is an incredible classroom to learn photography. For a keen student, there is a never ending array of opportunities to hone your technical, artistic and compositional skills. Further, it is an “all-season” photo location. While making this image, I was drawn to the raw power of the waterfalls. In spring, they seemed to tower over even the hard granite rocks !

• Early spring is a delightful time to make photographs in the Great Smoky Mountains - rivers are in spate, trees are brimming with young buds and the dogwoods are in full bloom.
A light persistent rain added to the overall atmosphere when I made this image. What caught my eye was the young dogwood tree which, despite its small stature was the center on attention in this beautiful scene.
The Beguiling Dwarf
• Storms that clear around sunrise are what we photographers yearn for in Yosemite. It provides the opportunity for mist to be swirling around the tops of the high cliffs. This coupled with the dramatic early morning light hold immense photographic potential. I was fortunate to encounter such fantastic conditions while I made this image!

• Staring at canyon walls towering 2000 feet high can be an awe-inspiring sight as it dwarfs us amidst the grand landscapes carved by nature. In this image, the grand sandstone cliffs & autumn cottonwoods seemed to converge with the cascading Virgin River.

• After the sun had set on another gorgeous day on Central California’s coastline, the beach was bathed in the pink afterglow. This helped to simplify the color palette into pastel hues.
Autumn Impressions
• In 2012, I spent over an extended length of time photographing the Great Smoky Mountain National Park. As beautiful as the place was in autumn, the first few days of photography left me a tad underwhelmed. I didn’t feel my images had done justice to the beautiful spectacle that I was witnessing. But my luck was to turn shortly thereafter. A deep ledge had prevented access to this scene by the river. After scrambling down the ledge and over a few giant boulders, I came in front of this picturesque spectacle. Here, nature seemed to compose the most beautiful symphony inspired by autumn foliage and the gushing river.
Autumn Rhapsody
• Australia is a distant and fascinating place for photography as the landscapes are quite unlike any place else. In Tasmania’s remote eastern coastline, lichen paints the granite rocks with orange hues. However, once I got to the location, the entire area was covered in grey and gloomy clouds threatening to ruin the photographic opportunity. So when a gracious host offered me an evening cup of tea by his coastal home, I decided to take him up on his offer. However, much to my luck, the clouds started to part at precisely the same time as I started to sip my tea. Frantically, I had to excuse myself from my host and rush over to the beach to make this image. The dramatic light lasted just long enough to make this composition. Here, the pink hues of the sky seemed similar hues on the foreground.
Eternity
• Visiting Yosemite National Park in early spring has become a bit of a ritual for me. In spring, the dogwoods are in full bloom and the Merced river dances its way through Yosemite Valley. I made this image one late evening as the wind stayed still !

• The quiet peace of winter is just as alluring as the vibrance of spring and autumn. This is a time for silent reflection even as nature appears to be on a temporary pause. However, as spring nears, nature undergoes a transformation - as blooming trees, gushing rivers and chirping birds return !
Stillness of Winter
• I have to admit - I love photographing dogwoods as they allow for varied and creative compositions. Fortunately, I have been able to come away with “keepers” from my trips to Sequoia, Smokies and Yosemite National Parks! Here, the delicate dogwood blossoms hang tantalizingly over the Merced river in Yosemite National Park.
Tumbling Dogwoods
• I like to experiment with contrasting elements while making photographs. Heavy rains and snow melt had caused the Merced River to crest to dangerous levels. The rapidly flowing river acted as a blank canvas while blooming redbuds and the lush green grass provided a vibrant contrast and anchor to the image.
Spring Blossoms
• Amongst the many reasons I love living in the San Francisco Bay Area is the easy access to a number of beautiful beaches! When I arrived at the beach in Santa Cruz, I was pleasantly surprised to see some low hanging clouds. As the sun went down the horizon, the clouds were set ablaze by the last light turning the beach into a riot of pastel hues.

Efflorescence
• A few years ago, snow melt and a heavy dose of spring rain had caused the Merced river to crest to dangerous levels. This had forced much of Yosemite National Park to be closed. As I was looking to make images in these conditions, a young tree seemed to be just about holding on against the force of this raging river.

• I enjoy making images that bring contrasting elements together. They lead to interesting opportunities for the photographer and drives a higher level of engagement for the viewer !! In this image, the redbud is a vibrant, transient and stationary element that coexists seamlessly with the permanent and fast moving force that the Merced River is.
Tryst
• One rarely associates Australia with temperate rainforests. However, just some distance inland from the coasts lie some remarkably, pristine lush forests.
Erskine Falls
• Late afternoon light bouncing off the surrounding volcanic rocks created wonderful abstract patterns on the run-off from Burney Falls making it glisten like gold foil. The foreground rocks provided an anchor to the photograph.

Divinity
• I can endlessly watch waves lapping up against the shore. There is something therapeutic about the rhythmic sound they make that it seems to wash away all of one’s anxieties. While making this image, the waves appeared to wrap the rocks in a warm embrace. This image was made at a remote national park in Australia’s island state of Tasmania.

• I find making photographs during seasonal transitions a tantalizing experience as such scenes tend to confound the mind! While making this image, a late spring storm had spray painted the grassy meadows with a fresh coat of snow. The first light of day illuminated the top of El Capitan and turned the Merced River into a reflection pool.
Mirage
• Most of my photographs are made with a tripod as that allows me to slow down.
This photograph is an exception as we went canoeing through the bayou! This was an incredible way to experience the bayou as it allowed me to get deep into otherwise inaccessible parts of the bayou. Here, all that I heard was the bird whistles and spanish moss ruffling in the wind from grand cypress trees.

• At Yosemite, while the grand cliffs and waterfalls are the biggest draw, photographs can be made even away from marked vista points. The golden morning light reflecting off the surrounding spring canopy created abstract patterns on the river bed.

• New Zealand is a fascinating place for landscape photography as there are innumerable areas to experience, explore and make photographs. However, many areas do have a 50/50 chance (or more) of rainfall. So that does make photography prone to the forces of nature.

This image was made along the South Island’s eastern coastline just after the midday rain. Here, large boulders (that are almost other-worldly looking) lay scattered along a remote beach. I made this image well after the sun had gone down. The beach was painted with a soft pastel afterglow and it allowed me to present a contrasting element to the textured boulders.
Moeraki Boulders
• I enjoy making photographs in the bayou as here, time appears to have stood still even as Spanish Moss envelopes giant cypress trees !! The juxtaposition of soft green moss and tan colored autumn foliage provided a compelling subject matter. The placid waters of the bayou unified the scene to underscore the feeling of calm I experienced while making this image.

• I'm amazed by how vast and tranquil Lake Tahoe is. While making this image, I was able to catch the last light of day reflected in the still waters of the lake.
