• I lived in Texas for the first few years of my life in the USA. During this time, I frequented California’s Yosemite National Park and Big Sur coast. I was so enamored by these grand landscapes that I decided to move to California - with Camera, Lenses and Tripod in tow! I wanted to have unfettered access to these landscapes to make my own imprints photographing them.
The 3 day road trip from Texas to California came with a minor detour to New Mexico’s White Sands National Park. As with all things photography, this image came with abundant luck and perseverance. I was completely sleep deprived after driving all night to make it to the park. Further, grey looming clouds threatened to put a dampener on any chance of photography. However, just before the light turned blue, the clouds parted and illuminated the desert. This was to be the first of many instances persevering for the right light to make my photographs.

• As the snow melt progresses through the spring months
in the Sierra high country, the raging rivers are a sight to
behold. The dogwood blossoms provide a delicate
contrast to the force of the thundering river.
EFFLORESCENCE was made at Yosemite National Park in
California.
Efflorescence
• I have to admit - I love photographing dogwoods as they allow for varied and creative compositions. Fortunately, I have been able to come away with “keepers” from my trips to Sequoia, Smokies and Yosemite National Parks! Here, the delicate dogwood blossoms hang tantalizingly over the Merced river in Yosemite National Park.

Ode to Dogwoods
• Yosemite National Park is a magical place during a snow storm. The entire park becomes a photographer’s winter wonderland. It is even more breathtaking when the storm clears revealing patches of blue sky amidst the snow covered canopy. This image was made during a brief clearing of a winter snow storm.
Black Oaks and El Capitan
• Death Valley is unlike any other national park in the country. It is incredibly vast, stunningly varied, frighteningly inhospitable and breathtakingly beautiful all at the same time ! How else do you explain a national park that is the largest in the contiguous US, has the lowest point in North America, has recorded the highest temperature ever in the country but still attracts millions of visitors each year ?!

This image was made as a winter storm cleared over Death Valley. A pre-dawn start in the dark allowed me to get far enough and have the soaring dunes all to myself. Here, I was able to gaze in awe at gigantic wave-like dunes that seemed to be reaching up to the skies !!

• Even though Arizona’s Petrified Forest National Park does not attract the same number of visitors as other nearby national parks such as the Grand Canyon, it is still a remarkable place for photography. This place is known for trees that fossilized and petrified over the last 225 million years ! While making this image, I was looking to recall the story of this petrified tree stump from a million years ago.

• Yosemite National Park is an incredible classroom to learn photography. For a keen student, there is a never ending array of opportunities to hone your technical, artistic and compositional skills. Further, it is an “all-season” photo location. While making this image, I was drawn to the raw power of the waterfalls. In spring, they seemed to tower over even the hard granite rocks !

Morning Mood
• Visiting Yosemite National Park in early spring has become a bit of a ritual for me. In spring, the dogwoods are in full bloom and the Merced river dances its way through Yosemite Valley. I made this image one late evening as the wind stayed still !

Meandering Merced
• A few years ago, snow melt and a heavy dose of spring rain had caused the Merced river to crest to dangerous levels. This had forced much of Yosemite National Park to be closed. As I was looking to make images in these conditions, a young tree seemed to be just about holding on against the force of this raging river.

• I can endlessly watch waves lapping up against the shore. There is something therapeutic about the rhythmic sound they make that it seems to wash away all of one’s anxieties. While making this image, the waves appeared to wrap the rocks in a warm embrace. This image was made at a remote national park in Australia’s island state of Tasmania.

• In 2012, I spent over an extended length of time photographing the Great Smoky Mountain National Park. As beautiful as the place was in autumn, the first few days of photography left me a tad underwhelmed. I didn’t feel my images had done justice to the beautiful spectacle that I was witnessing. But my luck was to turn shortly thereafter. A deep ledge had prevented access to this scene by the river. After scrambling down the ledge and over a few giant boulders, I came in front of this picturesque spectacle. Here, nature seemed to compose the most beautiful symphony inspired by autumn foliage and the gushing river.

• Every time I’ve visited Zion National Park, I have been in awe at the canyon walls towering around me. It has made me realize how grand nature’s spectacles can be! While making this image, I found the juxtaposition of vibrant autumn cottonwoods and the tan colored sandstone walls of Zion canyon intriguing. It was quite challenging to visually separate these elements while making the photograph. The Pulpit rising from the river cove lent a spiritual touch to the scene and I used the surrounding cottonwood trees to frame it.

• New Zealand’s national parks are an absolute delight for a photographer - the air is clean, the landscapes are varied, and the light is incredibly conducive for photography. Luckily for me, the weather gods were cooperative too!

I would have settled for just a glimpse of Aoraki/Mount Cook, the highest mountain in New Zealand. Having an opportunity to make photographs there is what dreams are made of !! The hardest part of making this image was not the hike in the dark or in the cold - it was in crossing bridges that were swinging quite wildly in the wind! After crossing the second such bridge, I was able to finally get a glimpse of Aoraki/Mount Cook. I perched myself on a rock to soak in this majestic sight and said a silent prayer in gratitude before making this photograph.
Southern Majesty
• Over millions of years, forces of erosion have worked on the soft sandstone bedrock in the American Southwest to create incredibly stunning mesas, buttes and canyons. Angular early morning light accentuates the textured surface of these dramatic landscapes.
Primordial Lands
• Despite having a fear of heights, I had to be perched precariously on narrow boulders to photograph down a narrow gully. This was essential to capture the wispy cascades tumbling down from a giant waterfall.

"Karesansui"
• As spring descends in the Appalachian mountains, the dogwood blooms create a veritable floral tapestry. While making this image, soft early morning light coupled with a slight bout of rain accentuated the colors of this wonderful spring canopy.
Cascading Dogwoods
• Early spring is a delightful time to make photographs in the Great Smoky Mountains - rivers are in spate, trees are brimming with young buds and the dogwoods are in full bloom.
A light persistent rain added to the overall atmosphere when I made this image. What caught my eye was the young dogwood tree which, despite its small stature was the center on attention in this beautiful scene.
The Beguiling Dwarf
• Australia is a distant and fascinating place for photography as the landscapes are quite unlike any place else. In Tasmania’s remote eastern coastline, lichen paints the granite rocks with orange hues. However, once I got to the location, the entire area was covered in grey and gloomy clouds threatening to ruin the photographic opportunity. So when a gracious host offered me an evening cup of tea by his coastal home, I decided to take him up on his offer. However, much to my luck, the clouds started to part at precisely the same time as I started to sip my tea. Frantically, I had to excuse myself from my host and rush over to the beach to make this image. The dramatic light lasted just long enough to make this composition. Here, the pink hues of the sky seemed similar hues on the foreground.
Eternity
• My trips to Yosemite usually begins with a pit-stop at Ferns Spring to fill up my water bottles! The water has a crisp feel to it (must be due to the magic of the Sierra earth that it flows through)! For being one of Yosemite's smaller cascades, Ferns Spring packs quite a punch for photographic potential! Here, the reflections of nearby foliage accents the gentle cascades.
The Mighty Little Waterfall
• The quiet peace of winter is just as alluring as the vibrance of spring and autumn. This is a time for silent reflection even as nature appears to be on a temporary pause. However, as spring nears, nature undergoes a transformation - as blooming trees, gushing rivers and chirping birds return !
Stillness of Winter
• I like to experiment with contrasting elements while making photographs. Heavy rains and snow melt had caused the Merced River to crest to dangerous levels. The rapidly flowing river acted as a blank canvas while blooming redbuds and the lush green grass provided a vibrant contrast and anchor to the image.
Spring Blossoms
• Early spring in the Appalachian mountain range is a wonderful time to make photographs. Buds are just starting to form and bare trees make a myriad of wonderful geometric patterns! In this photograph, I was able to isolate a lone stately tree that had the red spring blooms and lichens tightly intertwined.
Spring Tapestry
• As spring descended in the Smokies, the blooming dogwoods complemented other flowering trees. Back lighting added to the overall charm of this typical spring scene.
Enchantment
• I enjoy making images that bring contrasting elements together. They lead to interesting opportunities for the photographer and drives a higher level of engagement for the viewer !! In this image, the redbud is a vibrant, transient and stationary element that coexists seamlessly with the permanent and fast moving force that the Merced River is.
Tryst
• Standing at the entrance of Yosemite Valley can be a very spiritual experience. It appears as if the gods of the ancient Ahwahnechee people still reside amongst these high cliffs that guard the entrance to the valley.
Yosemite Valley
• I find making photographs during seasonal transitions a tantalizing experience as such scenes tend to confound the mind! While making this image, a late spring storm had spray painted the grassy meadows with a fresh coat of snow. The first light of day illuminated the top of El Capitan and turned the Merced River into a reflection pool.
Mirage
• At Yosemite, while the grand cliffs and waterfalls are the biggest draw, photographs can be made even away from marked vista points. The golden morning light reflecting off the surrounding spring canopy created abstract patterns on the river bed.
Radiant Rapids
• The process of experimenting with abstract compositions in water is thoroughly fascinating for me as it throws up a range of interesting possibilities. While making photographs near Ferns Spring, I chanced upon a patch of water that reflected the surrounding vibrant spring foliage. I was able to make a few photographs before the light turned harsh.
Ferns Spring Impressions
• The delicate and ephemeral dogwood blossoms vie for attention with the tall, rugged and ever present sequoia trees. While these two subjects represent contrasting sentiments, they seem to exist in perfect harmony.
Fleeting & Forever
• I enjoy the feeling of bliss and calm when I’m in the field making photographs. It allows me to slow down and have the scene speak to me. I often look to portray these emotions and conversations through my work.

While making this image, a grove of slender birch trees seemed to be illuminated ever so softly with remarkable late afternoon light. The delicate autumn foliage that dotted these trees provided the ideal foil to its textured bark.
Echoes of Acadia
• The Colorado River has scythed through the sandstone beds of Utah and Arizona over millions of years to create incredibly beautiful mesas, buttes and canyons. In this photograph, the first light of day spotlights the top of the canyon transforming it into vivid shades of red earth.
First Light
• Fog adds a sense of delicate aesthetics to any scene. However, waiting for such conditions can be a test of perseverance. I had to make several trips before encountering settings ideal for making this photograph.
Enchanted Forest
• I absolutely love photographing autumn in the American Southwest. Not only is it an opportunity to immerse myself in these grand landscapes, but also to make photographs in incredibly favorable light. The vibrant cottonwood and maple trees are truly an embellishment to an already amazing canvas !
Color Burst
• Storms that clear around sunrise are what we photographers yearn for in Yosemite. It provides the opportunity for mist to be swirling around the tops of the high cliffs. This coupled with the dramatic early morning light hold immense photographic potential. I was fortunate to encounter such fantastic conditions while I made this image!
Clearing Storm, Three Brothers
• Staring at canyon walls towering 2000 feet high can be an awe-inspiring sight as it dwarfs us amidst the grand landscapes carved by nature. In this image, the grand sandstone cliffs & autumn cottonwoods seemed to converge with the cascading Virgin River.
Confluence
• Early morning light bouncing off the walls of Zion Canyon often turns the Virgin River into a bed of glittering gold. While making this image, I had to wade through water that was more than knee high in many places that fall morning. In fact, the flow was so high that access to Zion Narrows had to be closed just a few hours later !! After wading for more than an hour in these conditions, I came to this vantage point that seemed to lead me deeper into the canyon through the gold rimmed river.
River of Light
• The delicate and ephemeral dogwood blossoms vie for attention with the tall, rugged and ever present sequoia trees. While these two subjects represent contrasting sentiments, they seem to exist in perfect harmony.
Harmony
• Adhering to the philosophy that a little bit of confusion in a photograph is essential, this image was meant to engage the mind in the duality of a scene being both dynamic and stationary. The flowing river and the stationary trees embody these opposing moods.
Auric Flow
• I still remember the morning I made this photograph - the crisp, early morning air along with the fog sent a tingle up my spine ! Early morning fog adds a delicate sense of aesthetics to a scene of tall coast redwoods. The juxtaposition of mature and young redwoods is to highlight the perennial cycle of growth.
Whispers of the Woods
• D8e12_0218-copy-2.jpg
• As the snow melt progresses through the spring months in the Sierra Nevada, the raging rivers are a sight to behold. I anchored this image on a lone sapling that seemed to be clinging on for dear life amidst the raging Merced River in spring.
Tenacity
• One rarely associates Australia with temperate rainforests. However, just some distance inland from the coasts lie some remarkably, pristine lush forests.
Erskine Falls
• I look at photography as a vehicle to provide a visual into how I felt while making my images.
When I had visited this exact grove of trees earlier in the season, the scene appeared noisy and chaotic! So I passed up on making images there - expecting it to be one of so many gorgeous scenes that are beautiful in passing, but difficult to translate into a photograph!!

As the autumn season progressed and trees started to shed leaves, I returned to this grove. That late evening, after the sun had gone behind the mountain ridges, I was a lone witness to a scene transformed. Now, I could feel a quiet sense of calm take over while still being surrounded by vibrant autumn foliage.
Autumn Quiet
• I thoroughly enjoy making photographs in soft light as it allows me to create compositions that are evenly lit. Harsh spotlights can be incredibly challenging to overcome when photographs are eventually rendered as a print. While making this image, I waited patiently for the right light to showcase the layers of canyon ridges adding depth to the image. A sunburst was the final kiss of light for the day!
