• Early spring is a delightful time to make photographs in the Great Smoky Mountains - rivers are in spate, trees are brimming with young buds and the dogwoods are in full bloom.
A light persistent rain added to the overall atmosphere when I made this image. What caught my eye was the young dogwood tree which, despite its small stature was the center on attention in this beautiful scene.

Spring Melodies
• In 2012, I spent over an extended length of time photographing the Great Smoky Mountain National Park. As beautiful as the place was in autumn, the first few days of photography left me a tad underwhelmed. I didn’t feel my images had done justice to the beautiful spectacle that I was witnessing. But my luck was to turn shortly thereafter. A deep ledge had prevented access to this scene by the river. After scrambling down the ledge and over a few giant boulders, I came in front of this picturesque spectacle. Here, nature seemed to compose the most beautiful symphony inspired by autumn foliage and the gushing river.
Autumn Rhapsody
• As spring descends in the Appalachian mountains, the dogwood blooms create a veritable floral tapestry. While making this image, soft early morning light coupled with a slight bout of rain accentuated the colors of this wonderful spring canopy.
Efflorescence
• Early spring in the Appalachian mountain range is a wonderful time to make photographs. Buds are just starting to form and bare trees make a myriad of wonderful geometric patterns! In this photograph, I was able to isolate a lone stately tree that had the red spring blooms and lichens tightly intertwined.
Spring Tapestry
• As spring descended in the Smokies, the blooming dogwoods complemented other flowering trees. Back lighting added to the overall charm of this typical spring scene.
Enchantment
• I look at photography as a vehicle to provide a visual into how I felt while making my images.
When I had visited this exact grove of trees earlier in the season, the scene appeared noisy and chaotic! So I passed up on making images there - expecting it to be one of so many gorgeous scenes that are beautiful in passing, but difficult to translate into a photograph!!

As the autumn season progressed and trees started to shed leaves, I returned to this grove. That late evening, after the sun had gone behind the mountain ridges, I was a lone witness to a scene transformed. Now, I could feel a quiet sense of calm take over while still being surrounded by vibrant autumn foliage.
Autumn Quiet
• Despite having a fear of heights, I had to be perched precariously on narrow boulders to photograph down a narrow gully. This was essential to capture the wispy cascades tumbling down from a giant waterfall.
