I tend to be quite flexible about both what I choose to photograph as well as the color schematic to render it in. It is quite common for me to make a series of images in color and then switch to a monochrome rendition for some others. It is often the quality of light and the subject matter I intend to accentuate that dictate my decisions both in the field and in post processing.

After making a few abstract photographs in color, I came upon this scene of highly polished coastal rocks that looked like a sculpture. I wished to highlight the sharp contrast between the sculpted surface of these rocks and the texture of pebbles surrounding it, both created as a result of waves repeatedly lashing the coastline. A monochromatic rendition helped accentuate the shape and contrast.
