• New Zealand is a fascinating place for landscape photography as there are innumerable areas to experience, explore and make photographs. However, many areas do have a 50/50 chance (or more) of rainfall. So that does make photography prone to the forces of nature.

This image was made along the South Island’s eastern coastline just after the midday rain. Here, large boulders (that are almost other-worldly looking) lay scattered along a remote beach. I made this image well after the sun had gone down. The beach was painted with a soft pastel afterglow and it allowed me to present a contrasting element to the textured boulders.

  • Early morning light bouncing off the walls of Zion Canyon often turns the Virgin River into a bed of glittering gold. While making this image, I had to wade through water that was more than knee high in many places that fall morning. In fact, the flow was so high that access to Zion Narrows had to be closed just a few hours later !! After wading for more than an hour in these conditions, I came to this vantage point that seemed to lead me deeper into the canyon through the gold rimmed river.

  • Australia is a distant and fascinating place for photography as the landscapes are quite unlike any place else. In Tasmania’s remote eastern coastline, lichen paints the granite rocks with orange hues. However, once I got to the location, the entire area was covered in grey and gloomy clouds threatening to ruin the photographic opportunity. So when a gracious host offered me an evening cup of tea by his coastal home, I decided to take him up on his offer. However, much to my luck, the clouds started to part at precisely the same time as I started to sip my tea. Frantically, I had to excuse myself from my host and rush over to the beach to make this image. The dramatic light lasted just long enough to make this composition. Here, the pink hues of the sky seemed similar hues on the foreground.

  • Amongst the many reasons I love living in the San Francisco Bay Area is the easy access to a number of beautiful beaches! When I arrived at the beach in Santa Cruz, I was pleasantly surprised to see some low hanging clouds. As the sun went down the horizon, the clouds were set ablaze by the last light turning the beach into a riot of pastel hues.

  • The Pacific Coast near Santa Cruz with its dramatic bluffs, rugged rocks, and sea stacks provide fascinating subjects for photography. I made this image at dusk as the last light in the sky reflected over the rugged rocks and the wave swept shoreline.
• I can endlessly watch waves lapping up against the shore. There is something therapeutic about the rhythmic sound they make that it seems to wash away all of one’s anxieties. While making this image, the waves appeared to wrap the rocks in a warm embrace. This image was made at a remote national park in Australia’s island state of Tasmania.

  • After the sun had set on another gorgeous day on Central California’s coastline, the beach was bathed in the pink afterglow. This helped to simplify the color palette into pastel hues.
Pastel Dreams was made at Pismo Beach in Central California.

  • Adhering to the philosophy that a little bit of confusion in a photograph is essential, this image was meant to engage the mind in the duality of a scene being both dynamic and stationary. The flowing river and the stationary trees embody these opposing moods.
    Auric Flow
  • Nikon's 70-200mm f2.8 lens is one of my favorite lenses for landscape photography. Not only is the glass of outstanding quality, it is also my "go-to" lens to make intimate landscape photographs. After hiking to Proxy Falls in Oregon, I was overwhelmed to see the waterfall in full flow. I made some images with a wider angle lens. However, what really caught my eye was the falls cascading over the lush verdant moss. I immediately switched over to the 70-200mm lens and was thrilled to zero in on this composition.
    Willamette Cascades
  • While high surf can yield dramatic photographs that show the raw power of nature, I’m just as excited to make photographs when the tide is low. Such conditions provide the opportunity to make photographs that appear ethereal or create mirror like reflections along the coastline.

While making this photograph, I was looking to compliment the dreamy flow of the tides with the dramatic cliffs reflected along the beach. I waited until sunset when the light turned pastel pink. This added softness to the scene making it appear dreamy!

  • My trips to Yosemite usually begins with a pit-stop at Ferns Spring to fill up my water bottles! The water has a crisp feel to it (must be due to the magic of the Sierra earth that it flows through)! For being one of Yosemite's smaller cascades, Ferns Spring packs quite a punch for photographic potential! Here, the reflections of nearby foliage accents the gentle cascades.
    The Mighty Little Waterfall
  • At Yosemite, while the grand cliffs and waterfalls are the biggest draw, photographs can be made even away from marked vista points. The golden morning light reflecting off the surrounding spring canopy created abstract patterns on the river bed.
    Radiant Rapids
  • Despite having a fear of heights, I had to be perched precariously on narrow boulders to photograph down a narrow gully. This was essential to capture the wispy cascades tumbling down from a giant waterfall.

  • The process of experimenting with abstract compositions in water is thoroughly fascinating for me as it throws up a range of interesting possibilities. While making photographs near Ferns Spring, I chanced upon a patch of water that reflected the surrounding vibrant spring foliage. I was able to make a few photographs before the light turned harsh.

  • One rarely associates Australia with temperate rainforests. However, just some distance inland from the coasts lie some remarkably, pristine lush forests.

  • The Pacific coastline is replete with incredible opportunities for photography. The subjects are varied ranging from dramatic bluffs to sea stacks, craggy rocks, tafoni, and piers. The overall atmosphere is often enhanced by waves, storm clouds or the marine layer. It is no wonder this area attracts photographers from far and wide.

I particularly enjoy making images late in the evening when most visitors are making a beeline for the exits ! At this hour, the entire coastline is enveloped in pastel hues and it is often hard to separate the expanse of the ocean, sky and shore.

That was quite specifically the mood I intended to create while making this image. I waded far enough into the ocean to amplify the feeling of being amidst the infinite. The oncoming waves, cloudless skies and the marine layer induced haze were all enveloped in the hues of the setting sun rendering the scene in sweep of pastel pink !

  • The marine layer and fog is an integral part of Northern California’s Pacific coastline. While making this image, the morning fog seemed to blur boundaries between the green tinged waters near the coastline and everything else beyond including the sky thereby creating a world of near fantasy !

  • Late afternoon light bouncing off the surrounding volcanic rocks created wonderful abstract patterns on the run-off from Burney Falls making it glisten like gold foil. The foreground rocks provided an anchor to the photograph.
