  • While making this image, I was drawn to the structure of these wonderful bare trees. What caught my attention was just the variety of shapes and hues of these bare tree. <br />
<br />
This image was made just outside Derwentwater in the Lake District.
    Bare Trees, Late Autumn
  • There aren’t too many places I could dream of being in a snow storm besides Yosemite. This place is a photographer’s winter wonderland as meadows turn into snow blankets and bare trees into graphic symbols. <br />
<br />
I was drawn to this iconic elm tree that was transformed by snow pellets lashing across its face into a pointillistic work of art !

  • While high surf can yield dramatic photographs that show the raw power of nature, I’m just as excited to make photographs when the tide is low. Such conditions provide the opportunity to make photographs that appear ethereal or create mirror like reflections along the coastline. <br />
<br />
While making this photograph, I was looking to compliment the dreamy flow of the tides with the dramatic cliffs reflected along the beach. I waited until sunset when the light turned pastel pink. This added softness to the scene making it appear dreamy!

  • I was excited about the prospect of a promising photograph as soon as I came upon this bare tree growing out of Derwentwater. <br />
<br />
Even though stormy conditions had enveloped the region, the lake was calm that morning. As I reflected upon my composition, it became apparent that a monochrome rendition would accentuate the submerged tree’s bare form and I used the lake’s placid water as a blank canvas for the photograph. <br />
<br />
Once I started working on the image, it was gratifying to find the photograph conveyed the deep sense of calm and reflection I experienced that morning.

  • The woods surrounding Derwentwater are truly wonderful to explore. The quiet lifestyle of the English countryside provides the perfect playground to commune with nature.<br />
<br />
While making this image, I was drawn to the overlapping trunks and twigs of these mossy trees. The low angled light seemed to provide a soft afterglow to the mossy trees.
    Crisscrossed
  • While making this image, I was drawn to the filigree like autumn foliage that seemed to be dangling delicately from the snow covered, silver branches of this wonderful oak tree.

  • The Pacific coastline is replete with incredible opportunities for photography. The subjects are varied ranging from dramatic bluffs to sea stacks, craggy rocks, tafoni, and piers. The overall atmosphere is often enhanced by waves, storm clouds or the marine layer. It is no wonder this area attracts photographers from far and wide. <br />
<br />
I particularly enjoy making images late in the evening when most visitors are making a beeline for the exits ! At this hour, the entire coastline is enveloped in pastel hues and it is often hard to separate the expanse of the ocean, sky and shore. <br />
<br />
That was quite specifically the mood I intended to create while making this image. I waded far enough into the ocean to amplify the feeling of being amidst the infinite. The oncoming waves, cloudless skies and the marine layer induced haze were all enveloped in the hues of the setting sun rendering the scene in sweep of pastel pink !

  • Tidal Caress
  • I find it irresistible to photograph bare trees! Once they have shed their leaves, honing in on their bare trunks and branches seems to reveal their structure; almost like an inner strength ! While making this image, it appeared as if these oak trees were guarding the young pine from the elements !

  • I find a walk in the woods to be a therapeutic exercise. The sights, scents and sounds of the woods rejuvenate my mind and soul. <br />
<br />
On this day, I had gone deep into the woods. After a couple of hours making images in other parts of the woods, I stumbled upon this section. The light cast a soft afterglow in the forest, while the low angled light created a warm canvas over the distant hills. I used the fallen foreground trees to provide depth to the composition.

  • Clearing Storm, El Capitan
  • When I was exploring the Derwentwater area, I came upon a wonderful section of woodlands. The area was ripe to exercise my creative juices by the sheer variety of shapes, textures, and colors. <br />
<br />
I was captivated by the outstretched branches of this magnificent mossy, bare tree. The colored understory provided a warm canvas to showcase the sprawl.

  • This image was made in the general vicinity that William Wordsworth lived. It’s hardly surprising that so much of Wordsworth’s poetry is steeped in his deep love of nature !<br />
<br />
As the forecast had called for rain showers through most of the day, I wasn’t really expecting to do much photography this autumn morning. Nonetheless, I decided to drive down towards the lakes just to be amidst nature before the rains came down.<br />
<br />
When this scene presented itself, I had to stop and make an image - neither the gusty winds nor the slight drizzle were going to deter me ! I took some time to find the right composition that accentuated the squiggly branches on the foreground tree while also providing some separation from the background tree covered with bright autumn foliage. This pause also allowed me to find just the right moment when the wind subsided to render all the branches in sharp focus. <br />
<br />
I have been excited to process and print this photograph ever since I clicked the shutter on this scene. I’m thrilled with the way the print has shaped up.

  • I tend to be quite flexible about both what I choose to photograph as well as the color schematic to render it in. It is quite common for me to make a series of images in color and then switch to a monochrome rendition for some others. It is often the quality of light and the subject matter I intend to accentuate that dictate my decisions both in the field and in post processing.<br />
<br />
After making a few abstract photographs in color, I came upon this scene of highly polished coastal rocks that looked like a sculpture. I wished to highlight the sharp contrast between the sculpted surface of these rocks and the texture of pebbles surrounding it, both created as a result of waves repeatedly lashing the coastline. A monochromatic rendition helped accentuate the shape and contrast.

  • While I have a general area of interest when I’m out making photographs, I tend to be spontaneous and flexible about the specific subject matter. The morning when I made this image was no different. <br />
<br />
I was hiking towards a stone quarry with the aim of making abstract photographs. However, the area was in and out of rain showers. It was during this window that I came upon this lone tree with its bright autumn foliage being softly illuminated by low angled light. As the sun was also coming in and out of a thick cloud cover, I had to find a quick vantage point. I chose the dry stone to lead the viewer into the photograph.

  • After a short hike on an unmarked path, I came upon this bare tree growing on a rocky outcrop. Despite the difficulty of growing over a raised rocky bed, this tree seemed to be reaching upto the skies.
